| Pulses : |
| Pulses, mostly belonging to the family Fabaceae, like
Mudga, Adhaki, Masura etc; cause constipation. |
| They are astringent and sweet in taste, absorb the
water(or tighten the sphinctres), Katu or pungent in post digestive effect
(because of the protein content), cooling and easy to digest. They are advised
as a diet in excess fat, Kapha diseases and Rakta vitiation. They are also
useful for external application (to clean the body dirt) and as poultices. |
| Green gram etc : |
| Among the pulses, Mudga (green gram0 is considered the
best as it increases Vata dosa only in a mild way. Kalaya (Field pea) increases
Vata heavily. Rajamasa (cow peas) too enhances Vata, is drying, heavy to digest
and forms bulk of faeces (due to non absorbable material). |

| Kuluttha (horse gram) are heat generating, sour in post
digestive effect. Subside Sukra dhatu (semen), Asma (urinary calculi), Dyspnoea,
rhinitis, couth, haemorrhoids and Kapha and Vata dosas. Duluttha cause
haemorrhage. |
| Flat bean, Sem : |
| Nispava (flat beans) increase Vata dosa, Pitta dosa,
Raktadhatu (blood tissue), breast milk and production of urine. They are heavy
to digest and act as laxative and irritative. They reduce vision, semen, Kapha
dosa, edema and toxic effects. |
| Black gram : |
| Masa (black gram) promote fat tissue, Kapha dosa, quantity
of faseces, physical strenght and Pitta dosa. They are laxative, heavy to
digest, reduce Vata and sweet in taste. They increase Sukra dhatu (semen) and
helps in free ejaculation. |
| Cow hage : |
| Fruits of Kakandola (white cowhage) and Atmagupta (black
cowhage) are similar in properties to that of Masa. |
